Every week we look at the announced diesel price and gasoline price movements and turn them into a plain-language recommendation, so you know whether to top up now or hold off until the next adjustment.
When does the fuel price change in the Philippines?
Philippine pump prices change every week, taking effect Tuesday morning. Oil companies announce the oil price increase or oil price rollback on Monday, so drivers get about a day's notice. Whether it is a gasoline price increase, a diesel price increase, or a welcome rollback, the change reflects the previous week's movement in international benchmarks and the peso-dollar rate.
How is the price of gas today decided?
The price of gas today in the Philippines tracks the Mean of Platts Singapore (MOPS) benchmark for refined fuel, adjusted for the peso-to-dollar exchange rate, plus freight and taxes. This is the official basis used by the Department of Energy (DOE) and the oil firms. It is also why petrol prices here do not move the instant global crude oil prices change, there is roughly a one-week lag built into the formula.
